We are excited to announce that the Race for RP has teamed up with Brandon Newey, Indy Motorsport Group and the BNew Crew at Mid-Ohio in the F2000 Championship Series, raising awareness about relapsing polychondritis and autoimmune diseases in this highly regarded open-wheel formula series. Brandon is a promising young driver with a stellar record to date, and we look forward to his success behind the wheel of the stunning No. 12 car sporting the Race for RP livery during this weekend’s action at Mid-Ohio. This track has significant meaning for our motorsport program, being the site of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship 2018 win by the AHN Autoimmunity Institute, AARDA, Race for RP No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 co-driven by brand ambassador, Kyle Marcelli.
Brandon started karting at the age of 11 at a track 45 minutes east of Indianapolis, at New Castle Motorsports Park racing against many up and coming drivers such as Josef Newgarden and Connor Daly. As Brandon progressed through the karting ranks, he quickly realized that he wanted to race open wheel cars.
Brandon’s first foray into open wheel race cars was in the Skip Barber National series where he would go on to finish 3rd by a narrow margin in the penultimate national championship, with two wins, ten podiums and two pols.
This was followed by a full season of F1600 racing where Brandon finished 2nd in the championship tied for a series high in wins that year with four wins, nine podiums and two poles.
The next two years following Brandon’s F1600 championship bid were partial seasons of USF2000 racing and Pro Mazda on the Mazda Road to Indy with fantastic results, highlighted by a top 5 run in Pro Mazda at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Brandon’s home race.
Brandon is equally talented off the track having earned a B.S. from Purdue University in 2016 and an M.B.A this year from the University of Colorado, Denver. We’re thrilled to be part of the team and wish Brandon the best success this weekend representing Race for RP and patients suffering from relapsing polychondritis as well as the millions of Americans who struggle with autoimmune diseases.
From the F2000 Championship Series Website:
The F2000 is a formula that was developed in England in the mid 1970’s. It is a step up from F1600, with the addition of more horsepower, larger tires and aero considerations in the form of wings and diffusers. The suspension geometry of a modern F2000 is as sophisticated as anything out there, and offers great training for drivers, engineers and mechanics.
The F2000 Series routinely has top ten qualifying time spreads measured in tenths of a second. The pedigree of top drivers who learned their trade in F2000 include Dan Weldon, Patrick Carpentier, Paul Tracy, Aryton Senna, Sam Hornish, Jr. and more recently, Connor Daly (Indy car), and [Race for RP brand ambassador and recipient of the 2019 AARDA Champion Award for raising awareness and about autoimmune diseases and the need for more research,] Kyle Marcelli (PWC), Santino Ferrucci (IndyCar).
